Apple's App Store New Strategy: Revenue Enhancement and Developer Relations Challenges

Apple's new App Store head Eddy Cue plans to increase revenue but faces developer backlash.

Apple's new App Store head Eddy Cue and new CEO John Ternus are looking to raise margins and squeeze more revenue out of the App Store, according to a Bloomberg report. Former head Phil Schiller reportedly stepped back from running the App Store partly due to concerns that aggressive monetization would further irritate developers and governments. Schiller believed that trying to extract more profits from the business would only increase conflicts with these stakeholders. In contrast, Cue and Ternus are pushing for more aggressive revenue strategies. Phillip Shoemaker, Apple’s former head of app review, has indicated that Cue may be more engaged with developers' needs and willing to build partnerships. Shoemaker emphasized that Cue's management style differs significantly from Schiller's, as Cue is likely to view developers as partners rather than mere applicants. This shift could lead to changes in the App Store's review process and overall developer experience, making it a critical area to watch in the coming months.
