Layoffs Intensify in the Gaming Industry

Recent layoffs at multiple gaming companies highlight the challenges faced by the industry.

The gaming industry is currently experiencing a significant wave of layoffs, reflecting the challenging market conditions. According to reports, Refactor Games, which collaborated with Delphi on the FIFA game for Netflix, has laid off 85% of its staff. Nathan Burba, the founder of the company, confirmed that the layoffs were due to funding being pulled by Delphi Interactive. Refactor Games was established in 2022 with plans to develop a football simulator to compete with EA's Madden NFL, but ultimately shifted focus to the FIFA project. Meanwhile, Tencent-owned Lightspeed LA has also announced layoffs, affecting approximately 80 employees. The company stated that the layoffs were a result of a shift in creative and development direction for its project, which was announced back in 2023. The project, Last Sentinel, underwent extensive internal reviews and play-testing, leading to the decision to make adjustments as early impressions did not meet expectations. These layoffs not only impact the livelihoods of the affected employees but also highlight the challenges faced by the gaming industry in terms of creativity and funding.
