The Dragon Quest franchise is set to host an event called "Gemini Quest" on July 30, 2026, in Tokyo, where participants will use Google’s Gemini app to scan barcodes to generate spells, which they can cast via augmented reality (AR) to free captured monsters and ultimately defeat the dragon lord. The event will take place at four locations in Shibuya and Harajuku, and players who successfully complete the quests will be eligible for a limited edition physical "mini medal" reward featuring engravings of iconic Dragon Quest monsters.
This event signifies a further strengthening of the partnership between the Dragon Quest series and Google’s Gemini platform. Back in April 2026, the MMORPG Dragon Quest X announced plans to introduce an in-game support character called Oshaberi Slimey, powered by Gemini, to enhance player interaction. While this initiative has been met with enthusiasm from some fans, it has also sparked concerns regarding the environmental impact of AI technology. Notably, the latest mobile game in the franchise, Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, has generated over $34 million in revenue within its first three months, with 90% of that coming from the Japanese market.
